In the TFP show, we never really see Megatron without at least a bit of influence from dark energon. Yes, at the beginning he hadn't really "taken part" in it, but by starscream's change in reaction to megatron, something had changed.

Also- even animals which have similar intelligence to us display horrific violence. From Dolphins to killer whales- Animals are no less violent than humans.
