Oscar Grant's aunt and uncle came to New Orleans to participate in the #SlaveRebellionReenactment this weekend. A powerful interview about what being part of @DreadScottArt's reenactment of an 1811 rebellion meant to them: https://t.co/JXXBCxE2C8
For those who participated in #SlaveRebellionReenactment, there’s still a lot to process after two intense days. For those who were not able to be there, much more documentation is coming. Check out @guardian’s short doc next week, John Akomfrah’s official documentary later.
What I heard most from participants in the #SlaveRebellionReenactment in New Orleans this weekend was the sense of solidarity they felt from each other, their trust and focus on the energy they brought to each other.
The past two days of @SlaveRebellion were amazing. The people who re-enacted this history were inspiring and we created a liberated space. Honored to be amongst it. Some good coverage at https://t.co/qqvcKju12z
Fifth through eighth graders at a local elementary school waited outside to see the #SlaveRebellionReenactment pass by. Afterwards, the principal wiped her eyes and asked, “Y’all understand what slavery was? What was slavery?”
On to New Orleans! #slaverebellionreenactment is heading to the New Orleans Jazz Museum (The Old US Mint) for a procession beginning at 3:30. Follow the reenactors to Congo Square for a Freedom Celebration.
