Day XXIX of XXXI
IF THERE IS NO GOD....
...And the soul is just myth.
What separates the man with the hammer from the monsters he bludgeons?
“The Wendigo isn’t merely a mob boss. It’s an ancient malevolence that wears the flesh of men. The terrifying question is…..who is IT wearing?”
Chapter 71 is the Grand Inquisitor. A full spiritual treatise inside a pulp action-horror book. @SledgevsBooks swung the hammer as far as it fucking goes. The pages do not flinch. The violence does not blink. Blood on the iron. Blood on the ice. The Hunger watches and waits to see if the man still answers to his name.
SLEDGE NEVER HITS SOFT. If it triggers you… GOOD! That’s the point. That’s the entire fucking point. The question does not stay on the page. It climbs the Chain with him. It stands in the snow while the Wendigo wears a face and asks the same thing back.
Two more days!
The Hunger does not care what you believe. It only cares what you become when the blood is on the iron and the ice does not stop.

I’m so proud of that map.
It’s my old-school, hand-drawn, hand-inked homage to the Hyborian Age maps of the pulp Conan paperbacks inside which SLEDGE was forged.
AND IT’S REAL…

Day XXVIII of XXXI
THE MAP IS REAL
Lake Superior is real. The Gunflint Trail is real. Magnetic Rock is real. A sixty-foot magnetite monolith that spins your compass. A relic of the glacier age.
@SledgevsBooks finished THE WENDIGO in the place the Hunger lives. Gunflint Cove is Grand Marais, Minnesota.
The Boundary Waters. The ice that was supposed to be a cell. The frozen woods that do not care if you make it out.
The Labyrinth was a machine. This is the land. The Wendigo does not need to be invented. It was already waiting when the hammer was forged.
Drop if you’ve stood on that trail...

@JLEngel5@AlreadyOverbook Brother, I FELT this in my fucking soul.
If I only ever have this one kindred spirit who FEELS my words and my world like you did… this entire writing journey will be worth it.
If you know… you fucking know. 👊🔨
I've had the chance to stew on this all day after seeing your reply and watching the review first thing this morning at 445 am.
First off, there's nothing to debate. The last thing I want to do is argue what resonates with someone else versus myself. Josh and I agree on a handful of points I'm sure you're aware of from my ARC notes compared to this review. No need to repeat those here for you. And I'm not doing it for anyone else.
The big point, however, revolves around chapter 71, and I believe, also 72. I don't think Josh has to explain himself on why this didn't grab him the way it did me. It's fine, and I know you, Nick, are okay with that as evidenced above. Who knows why the resonance between us, and likely other readers, differs. I can only speak for myself...
I FELT those chapters, as I'd told you, and maybe now is a good as a time to better express why for the fuck of it. They spoke to me directly because in my own way and experiences through life with its hardships and having an intimate relationship with violence, there's a part of me that has and still does feel like I'm on an island all my own. But I'm not stranded. That part of me belongs there and is best left forgotten, though he never is. He's always one bad day from charging off that shoreline and escaping.
The mental seclusion is something that has no remedy for one simple reason: I DON'T WANT TO LET GO OF HIM. He's not fit for society. He's not civil. He's untamed. And one day I, or someone I love, may need him.
So, I was completely engrossed by those chapters because I've been at a point where I've had that excruciating conversation with myself, with my soul, questioning everything existence has to offer to make a choice of who I needed to be then - still now and struggle with every day - and find my way to who to become.
I never fought a highly trained assassin gang or squared off with the cosmic horror of a cryptid legend, but I strongly sympathize with Sledge in that moment. Any man who's been pressed by harrowing circumstances and knew the only one way through that situation was to press back even harder had something to fight for. Something bigger than themselves that needed to take the lead in life. They likely often feel/felt secluded in their thoughts and philosophy, alone despite being around more than enough people, though none that can truly relate. A black sheep, perhaps.
That's my reason for being moved by those chapters - chapters that are quite frankly the best of the entire novel WITHOUT EXCEPTION. I can't help that others won't see or understand that. And maybe they're not supposed to or haven't earned the right to, if ever. 🤙⚒️☠️
