Neo Mahlangu (16), from Daveyton, Ekurhuleni, was visiting his aunt in Tsakane when he was tragically killed. It is alleged that he was beaten to death with a stick by his aunt, Andile Aalivirah Mthembu (born 1985). Her 14-year-old son is also alleged to have assisted in both the assault and the subsequent burial of the body.
Following the incident, the aunt reported Neo missing to the Tsakane police on 16 March 2022. In an apparent attempt to conceal the crime, she reportedly hired individuals to dig a large hole in the yard of her residence at 6367 Masia Street, Tsakane, under the pretext of installing a water JoJo tank. No such installation took place, and Neo’s body was buried at that location.
In early April 2022, police—assisted by Search and Rescue Warrant Officer Naidoo and his team—exhumed the body after suspicions were raised.
The aunt was subsequently arrested and charged with murder, as well as defeating the ends of justice and perjury. Her 14-year-old son was also implicated in the case.
The incident sent shockwaves through the community. Neo Mahlangu was later laid to rest in Benoni. The Gauteng Department of Social Development expressed deep concern and condemnation regarding the circumstances surrounding his death.
This year marks 15 years since Skeem Saam premiered on television.
The first episode aired on 13 October 2011, and the show has since run for 14 seasons. It remains one of the most popular, SAFTA award-winning soapies in South Africa.
Graduate’s Emotional Moment Captures Hearts
Twenty-four-year-old Nokuthula Dlamini, an only child raised by a single mother who works as an informal trader, was overcome with emotions as she graduated from the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) this week with a Bachelor of Arts Honours in Sociology.
Video and images of an emotional Nokuthula embracing her mother, Lindiwe Dlamini, during the ceremony soon went viral on social media, prompting public offers of support, including clothes and photoshoots.
She had attended graduation without a new dress as she could not afford one.
“I did not want to trouble my mother because I knew the dire situation at home, so I decided to go with the clothes I had. What was important for me was just to be present at graduation because I thought this might be the last one for me,” said Dlamini.
Dlamini, who is from Pietermaritzburg, said she was filled with mixed emotions during the ceremony as she recalled the struggles she faced during her studies and in the lead-up to her graduation.
She said the tears were for how grateful she is to finally make it, the support she received, and the happiness of making her mother proud.
Her financial struggles made the journey to success a lot more challenging. She thanked her lecturer, Dr Siphamandla Sithelo, who secured accommodation for her for the year, and she said her roommate, Ms Khethukuthula Khoza, assisted with food and anything else she needed. She also thanked her supervisor for encouraging her to attend counselling.
After trending on social media, people have reached out to Dlamini with various gestures. “I am so grateful to everyone who has reached out. I wish I could shout to the world to thank each and every one of them. I feel God has answered all my prayers and worries. Thank you to everyone,” said Dlamini.
She encouraged other students facing financial struggles or challenges to never let those struggles deter them from following their dreams. “Don’t give up, go out and finish what you started,” said Dlamini.
People are angry that she told the truth about Shebeshxt and now he's not gonna be released from prison.😩
They wanted her to lie under oath and lose her job for someone who can’t control his life😏
“Don’t tell me witchcraft isn’t real. Imagine working hard surviving the UFs vision 130 , academic stress, exam season, sleepless nights. Preparing for the graduation, travelling with your family just to Die 30 minutes before your graduation ceremony 💔💔.”
This country & society benefits NOTHING with Malema in prison. NOTHING! Not on those charges!
