This optimism turned to euphoria by 1929, ending in the Black Tuesday crash. The market dropped by about 89% from its peak in 1929 to its lowest point in 1932. The Great Depression followed, showing the dangers of speculation and the use of excessive leverage.
Bull markets are born in pessimism, grow in skepticism, mature in optimism, and die in euphoria. Looking at the current market, I wonder if we are in the optimistic stage or nearing the dangerous phase of euphoria.
**𝟏𝟗𝟐𝟗 𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐜𝐤 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐭 𝐁𝐮𝐛𝐛𝐥𝐞:** The 1920s saw a boom in factories and consumer spending, leading to a speculative frenzy in the stock market. The average P/E ratio of industrial companies shot up to around 32, well above historical norms.
With the AI bull market going strong every week and AI indexes gaining over 100% from the bottom of 2022, let’s compare the current run to previous speculative bubbles in history.
