It's taken me two, maybe three months and I'm just over 2/3 through Cartarescu's Solenoid. I don't think a book has ever kicked my ass like this before, and I mean that in the best way possible.
"That's my favorite book, but you know it's the first of 5, and you got to read it all twice to get all of it."
"Cool."
"Yeah, it's not like regular sci-fi, it's more like Melvile or Proust."
"I've read Melville and Proust."
"Oh... Well you should be good."
Being a regular who the staff actually likes is the best shit in the world. People want to be nice and do special shit for you if you give them an opportunity and don't take advantage of it.
This is why old men go to the same diner for 35 years and younger men rotate between six restaurants
At some point you either accept being known to the village or spend your life one friendly waiter away from starting over
We've overcorrected on the snobbery discourse in all art. A little snobbery is necessary. One of the reasons our culture feels like a dessicated corpse reanimated by vacuous corporate morons is because we got rid of snobbery as a check for authenticity.
Nevermind that some of these titles are great, the issue isn't the actual books, it's the fact that some fans have decided the only book/s they ever read is the best book ever and anyone who disagrees is personally attacking them.
My buddies and I watched this in the theater in high school and loved it, thought it was so badass. And now we're all a bunch of woke leftists. The impact of single work of art on a person is negligible.
just watched. the most important film of the 21th century. video games, ultraviolence, the ancient world as redemption for the modern. i don't know zack snyder but i know he has perfected fascist cinema. beguiling and horrifying. they all think they're gerard butler
East of Eden is really the one book it seems like everyone who reads it loves. From lit snobs to romantasy fans and everyone in between. Truly a transcendent work of art.
Lmao even... I was flirting with academia in 2012 and every single professor was telling us the top row was dead and to do something else unless you were absolutely committed to being poor and unhappy.
