Lincoln was a better general than everyone of his generals excepting Grant and Sherman. When Lee won at Chancellorsville he went for Harrisburg PA. Hooker told Lincoln he could take Richmond now! Lincoln had to remind him Lee’s army not Richmond. Lee was probably counting on this and it took Lincoln stop it.

After the Civil War, soldiers, their families and communities described them as “broke down”, “played out” and crazy. I think all combat veterans now know exactly what they were describing. War takes it out of you and you might look as if your ok but your not.

Here is one historical example of why total surveillance destroys from within. Stanton, Lincoln’s soon to become Sec of War derided Lincoln in his personal letters but became the lynch pin in prosecuting the war. Today with the surveillance state he would have been canned, and there would go a lot of hope for winning, possibly a lose. Ironically Stanton then went on to create a virtual surveillance state later by commandeering all telegraph and postal communications. So the little shit went on to know about all the other little shits.
