Messi started out as the best player on his team. And the best player on every other team too. At 10 and 11 years old, coaches would remove the centre-forwards because they got in his way. Teams were shaped around his strengths. His teammates gave him the ball because he helped them win. They became his friends because they admired him.

Then he grew up. And along the way he met players who did not know him. Some had their own stories, their own fears and, in some cases, oversized egos.

He wasn’t always respected. Teams didn’t always play for him. He didn’t always receive the ball in the places where he could change everything.

Until Scaloni arrived.

Once again, a coach who understands that when you have Messi, the challenge is not to fit him into an idea, but to build the idea around him.

Once again, the best player on his team. Once again, the best player among all teams. Nine goals in his last twelve World Cup matches.

And his teammates, just as they did when they were 10 years old, keep looking for him. Because with him nearby, winning becomes easier, and because they admire him for it, and for taking their profession to places nobody had imagined.

Some stories return to the beginning.

Like songs that, after all the verses, find their way back to the chorus.

🇪🇸 Rayo Vallecano reaching a European semi final is a bigger deal than you probably even realise!

Fans have to queue up for tickets as they don’t sell any online. Power cuts are a regular occurrence at Vallecas as well as no running water. Their infrastructure is, to be honest, a joke.

Despite all this they have a very talented group of players and coach who are backed by some of the best fans in Spain.

If any club deserves this achievement, it’s Rayo Vallecano!

Open letter from @mmourino, president of Celta, to @Madonna

Dear Madonna,

I am writing to you to ask for your help with something that means a great deal to us.

On the 29th July 1990, you performed live at our stadium, Balaídos, the home of Celta Vigo, the club I am proud to serve as president. On that night, we had the honour to see you wearing our sky-blue shirt.

This beloved memory still lives among our supporters. The photograph of you wearing our shirt has become a myth and is now part of our history which is written often beyond the limits of the football pitch.

Many see this as a simple coincidence. I like to think that nothing happens by chance.

Although ours was not the only football shirt you ever wore on stage, this iconic image has grown to shine differently as years have passed. Over time we came to better understand what you stood for back then: questioning established norms and standing up to those who try to tell you what you can or cannot do.

At our club we recognise ourselves in this line of thought.

That is why we hold on to the hope of finding the garment you once wore. This search is an act of memory, a symbol of part of the emotional heritage of our club and what it stands for.

This Friday, 6th March, we would like to send you a gesture of affection from our home, the Balaidos stadium. It will be at 8:45pm, before the Celta - Real Madrid match, with the intention of asking you just one simple question:

@kevvwill I found him like this at Man Utd too which is why I’m sceptical. The tracking back has always been a problem (jogs back) but would have periods where he’d be ‘interested’ again so would be a bit better and then it would fall off a cliff. He’s got the talent but we’ll see.
