SAPS Confirms eMalahleni March, 14 Undocumented Foreign Nationals Arrested
The South African Police Service (SAPS) has confirmed that a march involving about 1,500 participants took place in eMalahleni (Witbank), Mpumalanga, on Thursday, 4 June 2026, with police monitoring the event to ensure public safety.
The march started in Vosman and proceeded to the Witbank Central Business District, where a memorandum was handed over to the Executive Mayor of the Emalahleni Local Municipality. The demonstration formed part of a growing wave of anti-illegal immigration protests that have taken place in several parts of South Africa in recent months.
According to SAPS, the march proceeded peacefully without any major incidents. During operations linked to the event, officials from the Department of Home Affairs processed a number of foreign nationals. Fourteen people were found to be without valid documentation to remain in South Africa and were subsequently arrested and charged under immigration laws.
Acting Mpumalanga Provincial Commissioner Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi said police would continue working with other law enforcement agencies to ensure compliance with the law. He also warned against vigilantism, urging communities to report criminal activities through legal channels rather than taking the law into their own hands. SAPS has repeatedly called on communities to avoid acts of intimidation or violence against foreign nationals while law enforcement agencies carry out their duties.
