In Spain, the family farming model is clearly predominant, representing 70% of the agricultural sector. A relevant example of this model is the southeast of the country, particularly in the coastal areas of the provinces of Granada and Almerรญa.

Our Irish friends, Leitrim Organic Farmers Coop, was established in 1998 to develop markets for its members produce and provide education and training. The Coop provides services to both smallholders and organic farmers in Leitrim and the wider region.
Smallholder farms are characterised by family-focused motives and it is the families who are responsible for everything from production to farm maintenance.

Small farms are a crucial element of the European agricultural system. They produce most of the healthy and diverse food that we eat every day, they provide local jobs and sustain rural activities, and they secure the resilience of our food system.
Nevertheless, across Europe small farms are disappearing. They struggle to compete with large multinational agro-businesses, they are under pressure from land grabbing, and they face serious challenges to secure public support, as they are often considered unviable and outdated.
