Not that you asked, but I have a few quick recommendations for some worthwhile viewing and listening this week, beginning with my conversation with @JonErwin13 the terrific director of a really good movie called Young Washington, which premiered in theaters on Independence Day. Modesty aside, the conversation is excellent, the movie is thrilling, and I encourage you to enjoy both at your leisure. We say it all the time, but it’s worth repeating – Washington was without question, the most indispensable American to ever live. It’s super interesting to see what shaped him as a young man, and the mistakes he made on the road to his remarkable presidency, especially in the wake of our semi quincentennial.

Also, though I had nothing to do with it, I heartily recommend another very patriotic movie called “Pressure,” that tells the weirdly riveting story of a very unpopular weather forecast from a very disagreeable meteorologist whose instincts might very well have altered the outcome of WWII. I have no idea how this one got greenlit, because the treatment must have looked ridiculous on the page...

“A WWII thriller that takes place almost entirely in a drawing room, wherein two meteorologists of differing opinions argue over the best day for Eisenhower to invade Europe.”

There’s no way this movie should be as good as it is, but it is. And Brendan Fraser as Eisenhauer is terrific.

And finally, I just got around to listening to @pmarca Marc Andreessen on @joerogan. It’s another three-hour marathon that was recorded a month ago, but don’t be dissuaded. This is a must-watch for anyone who is open to the possibility that data centers and AI might not be the encroaching Armageddon that so many believe it to be. Or at least curious to understand how the genie got out of the bottle, and why it will never be returned. (I listened to it at 1.75 speed, which takes some getting used to, but knocks the running time down to less than two hours. You can also start listening to an hour in, and still come away with a lot of useful insight.)

I think this whole situation surrounding Mitch McConnell just became far more serious.

What authority was Elaine Chao acting under when she met with a senior CCP while her husband, a sitting U.S. senator, was hospitalized following a reported medical emergency?

Elaine Chao hasn’t held a U.S. government position since January 7, 2021, when she resigned as Secretary of Transportation.

The Logan Act prohibits unauthorized private citizens from conducting correspondence or negotiations with foreign governments regarding disputes or matters involving the United States.

If Elaine Chao was representing the United States with authorization from the U.S. government, the State Department should say so.

If she was acting solely as a private citizen while discussing U.S.-China relations with senior Chinese officials, it raises legitimate questions about whether the Logan Act could apply.

The State Department should immediately explain whether this meeting was officially sanctioned, what capacity Elaine Chao was serving in, and whether she had authorization to engage in those discussions.

President Trump has previously criticized Elaine Chao over her family’s business ties to China. Regardless of politics, the American people deserve transparency about the purpose of this meeting.

These questions are even more important because there are still serious unanswered questions about Senator McConnell’s condition. We still do not know the status of a sitting U.S. senator while his wife was meeting with the CCP.

Finally, has anyone confirmed whether Elaine Chao has returned to the United States? If so, when? If not, where is she now?

This is a national security issue. The American people deserve answers.

In 1901, divers pulled a lump of corroded bronze out of a two thousand year old shipwreck. It took the next century to understand what it was, and the answer broke the timeline of human history.

It's called the Antikythera Mechanism, and it is the oldest known computer on earth.

It was built by the ancient Greeks, around 100 BC, and it should not exist. Nothing else of its sophistication would appear anywhere in the world for more than a thousand years after it...

It was found by sponge divers off the Greek island of Antikythera, in the wreck of a trading ship that had sunk in the first century BC, surrounded by bronze statues and pottery.

The corroded fragments looked like nothing at first, and sat largely ignored in a museum in Athens. Only over the following decades, and especially with modern X-ray and CT scanning in our own century, did researchers finally see inside it.

What they found was a machine. Behind its bronze face was a system of at least thirty interlocking precision gears, cut and arranged with a sophistication that would not be matched until the geared astronomical clocks of medieval Europe, well over a thousand years later.

It was, in the words of the team that studied it, a mechanical computer that worked by turning astronomical theory into bronze...

And it did extraordinary things. You turned a hand crank on the side, and the mechanism calculated the positions of the sun, the moon, and the five planets the Greeks knew. It tracked the phases of the moon. It predicted solar and lunar eclipses years in advance. It even displayed the four-year cycle of the ancient Olympic Games. A person standing in the ancient world could set this device to a date and watch the heavens be calculated in front of them, by gears, by hand.

Roughly a third of the original survives, in 82 corroded fragments. We still do not know who designed it, or how a civilization without anything resembling industrial machinery achieved this level of precision engineering. What is certain is that it was not a one-off accident. A device this refined implies a tradition behind it, generations of knowledge and earlier attempts that have been lost completely.

The Antikythera Mechanism is proof of how much the ancient world knew, and how much of what human beings have achieved has simply vanished without a trace, leaving us to stumble on a single piece of it at the bottom of the sea...
