We would also like to congratulate Lais’ supervisors: prof. Mirjam Knockaert (Ghent University), prof. Maikel Pellens (KULeuven) and prof. Abir Al-Tabbaa (University of Cambridge).
We wish Dr. Bandeira Barros all the best in her future endeavors.
We are delighted to announce that Dr. Laís Bandeira Barros has successfully obtained her PhD at Ghent University! Dr. Bandeira Barros has made significant contributions to the field of commercialization of innovation in the construction industry within the Smartincs project.
Suelen (ESR6) participated to the “Science is Wonderful!” festival which was celebrated in Brussels (25 and 26/04) with the participation of a team from @Univcordoba. Her presentation was one of the 40 selected from 400 applications!

Fluid flow of a healing agent traveling through self-healing concrete can be visualized using CT. We scanned a porous vascular network embedded in concrete. You can clearly see the polyurethane flowing through the network and pores, and into the crack. #H2020#smartincseu
Niranjan Prabhu (@PolitecnicoDICA @ugent) has been working on innovative low-cost macroencapsulation techniques pioneered by Buildwise🇧🇪. Commonly used for medicines 💊, these gelatin capsules now heal concrete cracks! Check via link:

Congrats Yasmina Shields, who obtained a PhD from @ugent after defending her work on “Self-healing concrete with a 3D printed ductile-porous vascular network”. It was great to see the evolution from proof-of-concept to demonstrator application.

Congrats to Vanessa Cappellesso! She defended her PhD “Self-Healing Concrete in Aggressive Environments” and earned a joint PhD from @ugent and @KU_Leuven.
Key result: matrix to select self-healing technology based on the environmental exposure

Laís (ESR15) had a great journey with 9 international secondments to investigate the commercialization of self-healing concrete, and this visit to a site in Italy using this technology was the perfect wrap-up. Exciting times ahead for sustainable construction!

We are pleased to share our latest paper prepared by Shan He from TU Delft. This paper documented how healing products precipitated around a crack and how bacteria close cracks in the vicinity of the healing agents. The paper is open access via https://t.co/HLHHazDebt
Last week our yearly Supervisory Board Meeting took place in a hybrid format at Politecnico di Torino, in Turin, Italy. It was great to be together again and hear about the fascinating final stages of research performed by the ESRs.

Davide (ESR14) showcased his research on seismic performance-LCA interaction at IALCCE 2023 at Politecnico di Milano. Proceedings are now published open access, offering broader access to his crucial findings on this topic.
🔬 Exciting research at SINQ Neutra beamline, @psich_en, using neutron radiography! We investigated the resilience under extreme conditions of self-healing concrete with microcapsules developed in the SMARTINCS framework to enhance concrete durability.

Non-destructive techniques help to diagnose existing infrastructure to provide information on the need for maintenance. You can see different techniques observed by the ESRs for corrosion monitoring during their Training School at @IETorroja CSIC, Madrid. #H2020#smartincseu
From Lab to Construction Site: Our newest publication uncovers the path to commercialize self-healing concrete. Download the paper now to explore how research meets industry innovation.

The school year is starting in many countries. Earlier this year, Shan (ESR8, @tudelft) hosted a booth at the Science is Wonderful! Event (@MSCActions), where 4000 school kids came to learn about self-healing concrete and SMARTINCS.

Did you know that most service life calculations consider concrete to be uncracked. However, these pictures show that a crack causes a deeper chloride ingress. Kiran (ESR13) tackles this by working on service life models for cracked concrete. #H2020#smartincseu
Suelen (ESR6) “My secondments in Italy have ended. It was a great opportunity and an enjoyable experience thanks to @PolitecnicoDICA and Penetron Italia.
