It began with coal and steel. But from the very start, our Union was always meant to be much more.
75 years ago, in Paris, with the signing of the Treaty of Paris, Europe chose a different path.
One of unity over division, of Peace over war.
The European Coal and Steel Community was never just an industrial project.
It was a project for peace in Europe.
A project for shared prosperity.
A project for strength and independence in a world of great power competition.
The very same purpose that still drives our Union today.
Today with @SecGenNATO we took stock of our common work to bolster European defence and continue support to Ukraine.
We discussed the upcoming NATO Summit and how we can upscale defence industrial output in Europe. We need to invest more, to produce more and to do both faster.
With the rise in global security threats, we agreed to work closely together in the next weeks to strengthen the EU-NATO relationship and prepare a successful Summit in Ankara.
I welcome the announced 10 day ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon, mediated by President Trump.
This is a relief, as this conflict has already claimed far too many lives.
Now, we need not just a temporary pause, but a path to permanent peace.
Europe will continue to call for the full respect of Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
And we will keep supporting the Lebanese people through substantial humanitarian aid.
Thank you @emmanuelmacron for organising this discussion on the safety of our children online.
With the DSA, we have EU-wide rules.
And now we have an EU-wide app.
It’s piloted in 🇫🇷 🇩🇰 🇬🇷 🇮🇹 🇪🇸 🇨🇾 🇮🇪
And soon available to all.
Online platforms are held accountable.
Parents are reassured.
In Berlin, @SecGenNATO Mark Rutte participated in a meeting of the Ukraine Defence Contact Group (UDCG).
Stressing the need for continued support, SG said, "we cannot lose focus on Ukraine, even with the many security challenges we face.”
He also welcomed new contributions by #Germany, the #UK and the #Netherlands and further announcements of support to PURL and the Czech ammunition initiative.

Today, Europe is Hungarian.
We are stronger. More united.
To the people of Hungary - you've done it again.
You have spoken.
You have chosen Europe.
It's a victory for fundamental freedoms.
President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, says that Hungary has 'chosen Europe' and returned to 'its European path' after defeat of Viktor Orban at today's election.
Congratulations to Nizar Amedi for his election as President of the Republic of Iraq.
This step should pave the way to government formation. Strong, stable state institutions are essential to addressing the serious challenges ahead and to preserving the progress achieved in recent years.
The EU remains a firm supporter of Iraq’s stability, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.

Dear Nikos @Christodulides and @CY2026EU, I wish you a fruitful and successful presidency of the Council of the EU. 🇨🇾
I look forward to our close collaboration and to working together in the upcoming six months for a resilient and stronger Europe.
Happy New Year to all Europeans!
2026 is here, with challenges ahead and the strength to face them together. United and determined.
Let’s build a Europe grounded in peace and security , globally competitive and internally cohesive, providing shared prosperity to our citizens.
And let us work for a more humane and more peaceful world.
As we start the New Year 2026, you can count on me and my team to continue working relentlessly to make Europe stronger.
Stronger at home, by fully mobilising Europe’s extraordinary potential for competitiveness and innovation in a world that is changing faster than ever.
Stronger on the global stage, by forging new partnerships and standing up for the values our friends and allies count on us to defend: openness, good faith and democracy.
Speaking from the bottom of my heart, my wish for 2026 is peace. A just and lasting peace for Ukraine.
For nearly four years, the Ukrainian people have shown extraordinary courage under the fire of an unprovoked war.
We wish them and all people across the world peace, well-deserved peace, in 2026.
After six busy and productive months, the Council presidency baton passes from Denmark 🇩🇰 ➡️ to Cyprus 🇨🇾
Tak (thank you), @eu2025dk, for your leadership over the past six months.
On 1 January, we say 👋 Καλωσόρισες (welcome), @CY2026EU!
More to come 🔜
