Cunha was signed specifically for Amorim’s 3-4-2-1.
He was the left-sided 10 who drops into midfield, carries the ball, and attacks the box from that half-space.
Amorim even said as much when he arrived, he wanted someone who could be “one more midfielder” when they had the ball and then explode forward.
That profile made sense at Wolves and it made sense on paper at United with Amorim.
Then the system changed. Amorim left, Carrick went to a 4-2-3-1, Bruno moved back into the 10, and Cunha got shoved out to the left or, lately, even up top when Sesko and Amad have been unavailable.
He’s NOT a natural 9. yes, he’s not.
When playing 9, he doesn’t hold the ball up or occupy centre-backs the way a proper striker does, and he’s not a traditional winger either.
He’s a hybrid attacker who needs the right structure around him. Without it he looks like a square peg.
He’s 27, he still has Premier League pedigree, Brazil caps, and a World Cup appearance this summer.
Any club that actually wants a mobile second striker or inside forward would pay good money for him.
United has a track record of falling in love with the idea of a player, and then they keep him through multiple managers, and then try to sell him two years later when the value has dropped and everyone’s calling him a “project.”
But Whether they actually do it next summer depends on who the next permanent manager is and whether they see Cunha as a versatile piece or as a leftover from the last guy’s system.
History says they’ll keep him and hope it works. That’s the United way.
Peter Drury next season after we sign Mateus Fernandes:
Mateus to Cunha, Cunha to Bruno, Bruno to Fernandes, Fernandes to Matheus, and Matheus back to Mateus.
Ederson is 27 in a month, has only played in Serie A, is at a club that manufactures frauds, is perceived as super athletic in the least athletic league, cant make brazil team in his prime and has 1 year left on his contract and we want to buy him for €45M.
So many red flags.
There are places we pass through in life… and there are places that become part of who we are.
Manchester will forever be my home.
To the city, the club, and every supporter, my sincerest thank you. These past four years have been unforgettable, filled with moments my family and I will carry with us for the rest of our lives. There simply aren’t enough words to describe the happiness and warmth we’ve felt here.
Thank you for every cheer, every memory, and for making us feel at home from the very first day.
Forever a Red Devil ❤️
