The UN General Assembly overwhelmingly approved another four-year term for Human Rights chief Volker Türk, despite opposition from Israel, the U.S. and Russia.

Israel blasted his renomination as a “moral failure.” Türk has been a harsh critic of Israel’s conduct in Gaza, condemning what he calls Israel’s “mass killing.”

On July 24, 1922, the League of Nations formally recognized the Jewish people’s historical connection to the Land of Israel and endorsed the reconstitution of their national home.

That was 26 years before Israel declared independence—and more than a decade before the Nazis came to power.

According to an analysis by Lt.-Col. (res.) Maurice Hirsch of the Jerusalem Center for Security and Foreign Affairs @jerusalemcenter, this date directly challenges the false claim that Israel was created merely because of European guilt over the Holocaust.

July 24 marks the moment the international community formally recognized that the Jewish people were returning to their ancestral homeland—not colonizing someone else’s.

It deserves to be remembered.
