Audrey Hodges painted herself with a background inspired by the stained glass windows in the church where her father is a pastor (which is also where she worked on painting her portrait). As well as her love of dogs, nature, and friendship.
Nevaeh had a clear vision for her portrait long before she started her final piece. Lou encouraged students to experiment with collage which allowed Nevaeh to determine which physical traits she wanted to accentuate: her glasses, her skin tone, and her hair.
Students worked on their pieces throughout Ramadan and during our discussions Laiba shared that she was feeling inspired to incorporate her religion in her work. In the background you will see religious symbols, words, and objects that represent her!
Here is one of our @MCSBluehawks student artists handing off her portrait to Lou back in March. Laiba was inspired by her love of Harry Potter and chose to depict herself as a wizard.
In May we were awarded a grant by the Hudson Arts Emergency Program which we used to purchase art materials students needed to finalize their paintings.

Why Many Black Children aren’t reading| @TyAllanJackson |TEDx https://t.co/6Raj3nhi2h
Ty makes the connection b/w illiteracy & the lack of diversity in children’s books & authors. The key to increasing literacy rates could be found in treating authors like the rock stars they are
Our HCBF authors are ROCK STARS. Our students are star struck 🤩 every year when they get to meet some of their favorite authors @HudsonCBF We are so fortunate that the authors we celebrate visit our @HudsonCSD schools & community. Giving our students a one of a kind experience.
