Rewatching Samurai Jack again and this time what strikes me is how completely in earnest Jack and Aku are. The dialogue doesn't try to be snarky, modern, or "relatable." Jack says stuff like "I am the lost son of the land you have pillaged. I am here to reclaim it. For my people, for my father, for my birthright." in complete earnest, and he continues to say things like this even when he's flung into the future and they become utter anachronisms.

The few times these characters interact with future things, they still somehow preserve their character because they are playing things completely straight. And all around them, the "modern" characters have these constant encounters with this unbreakable sincerity, and it strikes them, the way it does us, and it is unforgettable.

"Modern and relatable" is unnecessary. Make deliberate design choices and stick with them. Integrity shines in art. Embrace it.

To add I think there's a distinct art style for medieval fantasy aesthetics pre-Millennium, compared to how it is now
