For 16 years, researchers @SmithsonianSMS have been conducting infaunal monitoring, aka looking for critters in the mud of the IRL! Infaunal organisms are great bioindicators of ecosystem health & can help scientists assess the impacts of human activities on the lagoon.
Dr. Holly Sweat is a marine ecologist leading the @SmithsonianSMS Benthic Ecology Program & curating of the Indian River Lagoon Species Inventory. Her research focuses on cataloguing biodiversity & understanding how small, cryptic organisms engineer marine ecosystems.
We are saddened to report that Smithsonian Senior Research Scientist Emeritus and former director of the Smithsonian Marine Station at Fort Pierce, Dr. Mary Esther Rice, passed away yesterday at the age of 94.
Join @SmithsonianSMS for an evening talk about literature & #SciComm on 4/15, 6-7:30 EDT. Panelists include @NMNH Curator of Fossil Marine Mammals @PyensonLab! https://t.co/vegqj08ses
