A 28-year-old foreign national has been arrested in connection with the murder of five young men who were shot and killed in Motherwell, Eastern Cape, on 27 May 2026. The suspect was apprehended following an intensive investigation conducted by the Provincial Serious and Violent Crimes Unit in Gqeberha.
Police said the arrest resulted from a tracing operation carried out between the evening of 4 June and the morning of 5 June 2026 after investigators acted on intelligence gathered during the probe. The case relates to a mass shooting that occurred at about 13:33 at a residence in Mnenga Street, NU10, Motherwell.
When officers arrived at the scene, they found five males suffering from gunshot wounds. Four victims were discovered in the lounge while a fifth was found in a bedroom. The deceased were identified as Mpendulo Sjadu (17), Sonwabise Mkhweta (17), Luvuyo Crowly (17), Ibrahim Said (18), and Vuyisani Pinini (18). Three victims died at the scene, a fourth died despite resuscitation efforts, and the fifth later died in hospital.
Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Vuyisile Ncata praised the investigating team for their work, saying the arrest demonstrated the commitment of detectives to bringing violent offenders to justice. The suspect has been detained on five counts of murder and is expected to appear in the Motherwell Magistrate’s Court on 8 June 2026.
