The self-punishment part started when he was kicked out of the house and continued as the story goes on in the other world. And he wasn't handed that second chance, he was a random factor.

@sidvsicious @totithoth The only delusion I see here is your lack of understanding nuances in stories and what was written in the text, buddy. The Idea was that He'd punish himself and that he'd have to come to the conclusions himself internally, cause we the reader see the story from his POV.
