Henry Nowak was 18 years old. He was dying in the street.

And the police put him in handcuffs.

Why? Because the man who stabbed him claimed he was the victim of a racist attack. A “wicked lie”, prosecutors called it. A lie that helped turn the dying boy into the suspect, even as his life was bleeding out on the pavement.

Vickrum Digwa has now been found guilty of murder. His mother has been found guilty of assisting an offender after removing the weapon from the scene.

But this case cannot end there. This story can not go untold.

The watchdog is right to investigate, because the public deserve to know how a fatally wounded teenager ended up arrested while his killer was spinning a story. This is not about attacking a community. It is about truth, accountability and a policing culture that must never be so frightened of a word that it forgets the body on the floor.

Henry Nowak was not the aggressor. He was the victim.

And when a dying boy is handcuffed because his killer tells a lie, what else do you call that but a presumption of guilt, poor policing, and a culture too frightened of accusation to see the victim bleeding in front of it.

He deserved better than that. So does every victim.
