For International Women's Day, I'm finally sharing my story of being bullied out of a PhD. I'm disgusted by the lack of accountability I encountered from people who are supposed to deal in facts.
Including a female dept head & a Title IX coord.

@TheAnnualRant@innobrew@Katy_Brown4 You're missing the part where it was during a question and answer period during a big conference. He took time that was meant for anyone who had actual questions, and for people that might want to collaborate in the future, then used it to denigrate the speaker.
@Katy_Brown4 When I refused to stand for it anymore, from a student 2yrs behind me, because I found out he was doing the same gaslighting/negging to other women: I was treated like an unreasonable bully and thrown out on my ass. Good luck.
I got this shit from a student two years behind me. He had already had issues with other women in the dept when I tried to get help. I was treated like a bully and thrown out for the symptoms of my anxiety/depression. He couldn't troubleshoot PCR in his 3rd yr, but he's a PhD.
1/ A thread on my recent experience of bullying by a senior academic at a conference, which included him telling me I should be 'ashamed', pointing his finger in my face and calling me a 'disgrace'.
We absolutely must not stand for this kind of behaviour.
@MSAFungi@MSAStudents@plantdisease Chris Smyth manipulated Dave -- mostly at my expense -- throughout his entire PhD. I know nobody really cares about women in science, but I won't be around to warn other women about the behavior that derailed my career, so I'm doing it here.
@ProfessorFungus Hey! Remember when a male student was harassing and gaslighting me and you let him play you for a fool? I sure do. You flaunted your tenured straight white male privilege in my face while I begged you to confront the evidence and explain where I was wrong.
You didn't just fail me as an advisor. You failed to treat me with basic human decency.
I thought considering the possibility you are wrong was part of being a scientist. Obviously not.
You are a coward, an enabler of misogyny, and far from an ally for women in science.
@AndyKimNJ If this comes as a surprise to any American adult, that is someone who has not been paying attention to politics. Many people have been warning for several years what the right wing extremists are doing. They are NOT "Republicans." The GOP has been taken over by authoritarians.
This was the part of my experience as a PhD student in the Plant Pathology and Environmental Microbiology department at Penn State everyone who could have helped me decided to ignore. I would tag my former department head, Dr. Carolee Bull, but she blocked me. 🙃
Too bad there's not really a safe/reliable way to collect any of it without putting people who don't want to be pregnant in an even more vulnerable position.
We don't have enough evidence to support a link, but it's unethical to study it, so we just have a bunch of anecdotal evidence from various protests in Chile, Beijing, Portland, etc. https://t.co/MPAo6dWZqC
If it was fine for a male student to spread lies about me, it should be more than fine for me to spread the truth about how Carolee Bull treats female students when it matters the most. #DontBeACarolee
She didn't seem concerned when another student was slandering me, but she sure blocked me quickly when I tried to share my experiences re: her treatment of women in academia. Instead of actually trying to do better or help me rationalize her actions. #DontBeACarolee
