Full text of Proclamation Recognizing September 7, 2026, as Labor Day in Snohomish County
WHEREAS, the first Monday in September is an annual holiday to recognize the economic and social contributions of American workers; and
WHEREAS, Labor Day has its roots in the late nineteenth century when activists pushed for a day honoring laborers, and it became a federal holiday with an act of Congress in 1894; and
WHEREAS, our nation, state, and county rely on skilled, hard-working individuals to build and sustain the communities in which we live, work, and play; and
WHEREAS, there are 458,524 people in the labor force in Snohomish County, 435,729 of them employed as of July 2026, according to the Washington State Employment Security Department; and
WHEREAS, Snohomish County recognizes the valuable and varied contributions of workers, without whom our businesses, public agencies, nonprofits, and other organizations could not function; and
WHEREAS, the labor movement and labor organizations have historically advocated for the rights of laborers, and continue to do so to this day; and
WHEREAS, Snohomish County employs more than 3,500 people in a variety of vital positions that provide foundational public services, and those employees are the most valuable resource we have to meet the obligations of county government and the needs of growing community; and
WHEREAS, the County is grateful for the partnership with labor unions representing employees, including the Washington State Council of County and City Employees (AFSCME Council 2), International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF), Professional and Technical Employees Local 17 (PROTEC17), Snohomish County Clerks’ Association, Snohomish County Corrections Guild, Snohomish County Deputy Sheriff’s Association, Snohomish County Juvenile Court Supervisors Association, Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office Management Team, Teamsters Local 763, the Washington State Nurses Association, and Laborers Union Local 292;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, DAVE SOMERS, Snohomish County Executive, do hereby proclaim September 7, 2026, as Labor Day in Snohomish County. I encourage all residents, businesses, and visitors to join us in celebrating and honoring the many contributions of American workers.
