In Ezekiel 1, the prophet (during the Babylonian exile, around the early 6th century BCE) describes a whirlwind from the north with fire, brightness, and four living creatures (later identified as cherubim). These had human-like forms but multiple faces (human, lion, ox, eagle), wings, and moved in coordinated ways. Accompanying them were four wheels - “a wheel within a wheel” (like a gyroscope), sparkling like beryl/topaz, tall and awesome, full of eyes all around, moving in any direction without turning, and rising with the creatures. Above them was a firmament/throne with a figure like a man in fiery glory, interpreted as a vision of God’s throne-chariot (Merkabah).

Ezekiel explicitly calls these cherubim (angelic beings) and the wheels ophanim (often translated as “wheels” or a class of angels). The vision symbolizes God’s glory, mobility, omniscience (the eyes), and sovereignty - not a literal spacecraft. Many modern interpreters (including some ancient astronaut theorists) see parallels to UFOs due to the metallic gleam, complex movement, lights, and otherworldly appearance.

• Daniel: In Daniel 7:9-10, he sees the “Ancient of Days” on a throne with wheels as burning fire, surrounded by thousands of angels and a court scene. This echoes Ezekiel’s throne-chariot.
• Isaiah: In Isaiah 6, he visions seraphim (burning ones) with six wings, attending God’s throne, crying “Holy, holy, holy.” They have some similarities to Ezekiel’s living creatures in their proximity to the divine throne.
• John (Revelation): In Revelation 4, John sees four living creatures full of eyes, with faces like a lion, ox, man, and eagle—very similar to Ezekiel’s. They are around God’s throne, which has elements of glory and heavenly beings. Revelation also includes other angelic encounters and cosmic phenomena.
• Elijah and Elisha (2 Kings 2:11): Elijah is taken up in a chariot of fire with horses of fire in a whirlwind—another dramatic, fiery aerial departure sometimes linked to UFO interpretations. Elisha sees similar fiery chariots protecting him.
