Here is the answer. We we did the same.

In Japan there is no special statute that automatically increases the penalty just because an assault happens on a train, bus, or in a station. The act is charged under the ordinary Penal Code provisions, plus a few railway-specific rules when staff are involved.
Standard penalties
• Assault with no injury (Penal Code Article 208): up to 2 years imprisonment, a fine of up to 300,000 yen, detention, or a petty fine.
• Assault that causes injury (Penal Code Article 204): up to 15 years imprisonment or a fine of up to 500,000 yen.
(Note: from June 2025 the term “imprisonment with work” was changed to simply “imprisonment.”)
Extra charges that often apply on public transport
• Using assault or threats to stop a railway employee from doing their job (Railway Business Act Article 38): up to 1 year imprisonment.
• If the employee is a public official (many municipal subway or city-bus staff), it can also be charged as obstruction of official duties (Penal Code Article 95): up to 3 years imprisonment or a 500,000-yen fine.
• Interfering with the operation of the train or station by force or intimidation can add a charge of forcible obstruction of business (up to 3 years or 500,000 yen).
What actually happens in typical cases
Minor incidents that are common on crowded trains—grabbing someone’s collar, shoving, etc.—are frequently handled as first-offense summary cases. First-time offenders often receive a fine rather than a prison sentence, especially if they quickly settle with the victim (typical settlement amounts for no-injury cases are around 100,000 yen). Non-prosecution after a settlement is also common.
Serious violence (stabbing, setting a fire, causing broken bones) is treated far more harshly; recent knife-attack cases on Tokyo-area trains produced sentences of 19–23 years.
In short, the location itself does not change the statutory maximums, but it can add railway-specific charges and makes arrest more likely because stations have cameras and staff who will call the police immediately.
