The first of our Committee Motion results is from @SocSec_ and their Action Motion for a food voucher scheme #SYP78

The Social Security Committee had a busy day at #SYP78. We passed a committee motion with 95% of MSYP’s in favour and got to work on what actions we can take to implement our idea 😊

This would likely be issued from a key worker in the young person’s life, stopping them from slipping through the net.

90% of young people consulted on this believe that a £15 voucher loaded onto a present-paid card to be used in supermarkets weekly would be more impactful than food banks in allowing neglected young people to access food.

The current Healthy Start scheme has had a hugely positive impact on young children in Scotland, which proves that a food voucher scheme is possible and potentially life-saving.

Even though cases of extreme neglect are rare, young people are still losing there lives to it. By creating a food voucher scheme that goes straight into the hands of vulnerable young people to be used in supermarkets, they will be able to access food in a dignified way.

The Social Security Committee will be putting forward this action motion at the September Sitting to ensure vulnerable young people’s right to food is upheld.
