Today, alongside the Scottish Illegal Money Lending Unit @StopLoanSharks and Trading Standards Scotland @TSScot, we are launching a new research report, “It’s always there, like a shadow behind you”: Women’s Experiences of Coerced Debt and Recovery in Scotland.
This report provides, for the first time, a comprehensive picture of the experiences of women affected by coerced debt in Scotland.
Conducted by Scottish Women’s Aid and commissioned by the Scottish Illegal Money Lending Unit and Trading Standards Scotland, the research highlights how coerced debt is used as a tactic of domestic abuse, trapping women and their children in long-term financial hardship.
Through in-depth qualitative research, survivors and Advocacy Workers have shared their experiences in their own words. Together, their voices reveal the scale of coerced debt in Scotland and the devastating impact of economic abuse.
Over the next few weeks, we will share these voices and highlight key findings and recommendations from the report.
