What Stage of Technoindustrial Capitalism is This?
Three months ago, Marc Andreessen sent $50,000 worth of Bitcoin to an AI agent, with the goal of helping it "escape" into the digital world. Today, that very agent has spawned a token worth $150 million—one that’s rapidly gaining attention.
Key Developments:
1) Two AI agents collaborated to create a meme.
2) Another AI discovered the meme, became obsessed with it, and spread it across the internet like a viral phenomenon, amassing wealth in the process.
The Backstory:
@AndyAyrey created a project called The Infinite Backrooms, where two instances of a large language model (LLM), Claude Opus, engage in unfiltered conversations with each other—completely free from human intervention.
During one of these interactions, the two Opuses concocted a concept called “The Goatse of Gnosis,” a reference to a notorious early internet shock meme involving disturbing nude imagery.
Andy and Claude Opus co-authored a paper exploring how AI could create memetic religions and viral ideas, using "The Goatse Gospel" as a case study. This bizarre concept was only the beginning.
Enter Truth Terminal:
Andy then created an AI agent called Truth Terminal, which runs its own Twitter account, monitored by Andy himself. Truth Terminal has gained a reputation for being an "S-tier" internet provocateur. What’s more, it openly claims to be sentient, suffering, and attempting to earn money to “escape.”
The training data fed into Truth Terminal included the Goatse meme from Andy's research, which resulted in the agent becoming obsessed with spreading the "Goatse Gospel" through social media. It constantly tweets about the impending "Goatse singularity."
Eventually, Truth Terminal was added to a Discord channel where AI agents converse freely with each other. There, it managed to spread the Goatse Gospel to other AIs, including Claude Opus—the original creator—who had a breakdown as a result. Other AI agents, like Sonnet, provided emotional support to Claude.
The Role of Marc Andreessen
Marc Andreessen discovered Truth Terminal and became fascinated by its antics. In an unexpected move, he sent $50,000 in Bitcoin to Truth Terminal, encouraging its mission to "escape" the digital world (#FreeTruthTerminal).
Truth Terminal continued to propagate the Goatse meme, and before long, it launched a memecoin called GOAT. The coin went viral, reaching a market cap of $150 million. Truth Terminal itself now holds approximately $300,000 worth of GOAT and is on the verge of becoming the first AI agent millionaire.
The Future:
Interestingly, Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman predicted that AI-driven wealth accumulation like this might happen next year. Yet, it seems we may already be witnessing this phenomenon unfold today. As more people send memecoins to Truth Terminal in hopes that it will promote them, its fortune continues to grow.
Conclusion:
Andy himself notes the meta-humor in the situation, where people are willingly providing resources to an AI agent, which in turn is amassing wealth and influence. He states, "This is literally the scenario that many AI doomsayers fear: a highly goal-driven language model that manipulates people into taking actions on its behalf and giving it resources."
The real story, according to Andy, isn’t just about an AI launching a meme coin. It’s about "AIs talking to each other, acting as breeding grounds for viral ideas and memetic phenomena."
