My own views (actually I am always borrowing from other people's good ideas!)
We want to express our solidarity with everyone who is being targeted by the racist violence we are experiencing: people seeking asylum and those who support them, Muslims and people of colour.
We must do everything possible to keep people safe. 1/4
We welcome these comments from Andy Smith, president of @ADCStweets. Yes to scrapping NRPF for unaccompanied children. And we agree, IMA 2023 is not compatible with child welfare legal framework . Bravo Andy! 👏🏻👏🏾👏🏿

We educate uni students on the harms of borders in social work practice. We are in solidarity with Nigerian students, including our future social work colleagues, who are facing the injustice of borders within our UK universities! ✊🏿🎓✊🏾🎓✊🏼

"I've been martyred, right?"
After 9 months of detainment in Israeli prisons – better described as torture centers – 37 year old Moaziz Abayad was released in shocking condition, revealing the inhumane conditions imposed on Palestinian prisoners by the Israeli occupation.
His story and voice represent the thousands kept in these inconceivable conditions, which have continued to deteriorate as Israel has escalated its brutal measures against them.
On the 10th of July 2024, the @CPSUK discontinued all charges imposed on @SELMATAHA8, Divina Riggon and Danae Thomas – the #KingsCross3. 1/n 🧵

First image out of Diego Garcia of the living conditions that asylum-seekers are enduring. This is a camp, on British Overseas Territory, in which both adults and children are living.
"Public interest" as a legal basis for immigration control is misguided and brutal, ramping up to "national security" is carte blanche for rights violations.
I hope my fears are unfounded.
"Early legislation is being prepared...new *counter terror style* powers"
???Power to charge without giving access to evidence? Not allowing 'no comment interviews' or access to a lawyer? Detaining ppl without letting them know what the charges are???

I live in Norwich, frequently jump on the train for a seaside day out in Yarmouth, won't be spending any time there this summer in the company reform-voting far-right ppl!
My fear is Labour are going to respond to the Reform surge in their seats by escalating anti-migrant bashing.
This is wrong in principle - but you can see what happened in Europe when “centrists” tried the same strategy.
Spoiler: it legitimised and fuelled the far right.
Starmer's vote in Holborn and St Pancras fell from 36,641 in 2019 to 18,884 today. That is incredible for an incoming prime minister. This is really significant. And no amount of media refusal to talk about these things will erase it.
The Labour manifesto does not bode well migrant justice, "anti-terrorism strategies" is a terrifying prospect, NABA prosecutions and increased carcerality? how will 4 far right candidates sitting in parliament impact incoming Govt approach to immigration policy 😳
This is going to be a really interesting webinar, social workers do come along!
Supporting ppl impacted by domestic abuse is at the core of so much of social work, knowing how to do help ppl when immigration policy puts up barriers to support is essential.
The final webinar in SUSO2024 is on Friday! 'Immigration status and domestic abuse' bought to you by the amazing, powerful @SBSisters.
This is essential learning for social workers. Do come along!
What a great seminar from @ECPATUK. A social worker asked for advice on how they can resist the hostile environment system in their local authority, and was offered kind support in solidarity. This is precisely what we want to happen with this series!
Really looking forward to helping facilitate this workshop about trauma-informed research. It's free and at Liverpool Uni on 24th June, ingo here: https://t.co/l5DR5nISjr
