On 20 July 1974, Turkish armed forces invaded the Republic of Cyprus and, following a second large-scale offensive on 14 August 1974, expanded their occupation to approximately 36% of the territory of the Republic of Cyprus. The invasion resulted in the forced displacement of hundreds of thousands of people and was accompanied by widespread human rights violations, including killings, enforced disappearances, and acts of violence against civilians. Women and girls were particularly affected, with many becoming victims of sexual violence, abuse, and other forms of gender-based violence.
Today, for the first time, the Committee on Women’s Rights and Gender Equality adopted a resolution addressing the impact of the 1974 Turkish invasion on Cypriot women and girls. The resolution highlights the crimes and human rights violations committed against women, including cases of sexual violence, and examines their long-term consequences for gender equality, social inclusion, and the lives of survivors and their families. It also calls for accountability, justice, and support for victims.
