Let’s celebrate the second annual Sojourner Truth Day! Two years ago, on May 29, 2024, Sojourner Truth Legacy Plaza and statue were unveiled in Akron, Ohio. News outlets from around the world broadcast the news.

Her speech challenged the exclusion of women of color from the women’s movement, allowing Akron to play an extraordinary role in the fight for voting rights for all women.

Congratulations to D’Essence Jackson, winner of the Sojourner Truth Legacy Community Scholarship for a College or University student. D’Essence received $1,000 cash from the Sojourner Truth Education Committee.

She went on to say that “the journey to medical school requires persistence and confidence. Knowing that I am supported by a scholarship rooted in such a powerful legacy would motivate me.”

Congratulations to Olivia Tidmore, winner of the Sojourner Truth Legacy Community Scholarship for a High School student. Olivia received $1,000 cash from the Sojourner Truth Education Committee.

Olivia was inspired by Sojourner Truth because she wants to use her voice to stand up for others and challenge injustice. “I want Black youth in Summit County to see someone who looks like them in positions of leadership. I want to help them believe they belong in those spaces.”
