And that is exactly what our experts are working to advance.
Our research shows that 70% of farmers are open to combining solar with their farmland, as long as farming can continue. Building on this, our experts are currently leading case studies on working farms that have already integrated solar. Findings will be released this fall.
“Rural communities want to maintain the character of the places where they live, and we have to figure out ways to do that that make economic sense for all parties," Dave Gahl, executive director, SI2, in an interview with The Daily Yonder.

SI2 is excited to welcome Michele Boyd to our team. As our new Senior Resident Fellow, she brings years of valuable expertise & will be studying the major drivers of utility bill increases in PA and VA.
Communicating the benefits of these projects to all stakeholders- including farmers- is critical. Our research shows that 70% of farmers are open to agrivoltaics provided they can keep farming. https://t.co/Fzyy0tyGEi
We are building on this research and will be conducting case study research at sites across the country where farmers have installed solar and continue to farm.
SI2's Fellowship program is open.
We are looking for graduate, doctoral, &/or post-doctoral students. This is a great hands-on experience opportunity in solar & storage policy research, policy analysis, & public education efforts,

SPP is putting SI2’s Game-Changing Interconnection Reform framework into action.
With 2,300 GW stuck in grid queues (80% solar + storage), more reform is urgent.

For the first time in decades, interconnection queue size declined, from 2,600 GW in 2023 to 2,300 GW in 2024, per LBNL’s "Queued Up" report. SI2 experts dug in on this. Read below on what’s really behind the modest reduction https://t.co/8hatkaGh90
Important to note, this attendance reinforces our survey results which show that 70% of farmers are conditionally supportive of agrivoltaics. https://t.co/01bbzx6Arj
Overall, this story explains the importance of these projects to rural America & complexity. It would be a shame if DOE let's half finished projects die on the vine, given their immense importance.

“The National Farmers Union annual meeting had packed agrivoltaics sessions for two years in a row, including this March,” said David Gahl, executive director, SI2. “But we are seeing a focus that shifts from the federal government leading the way to states leading the way.”
The U.S. Department of Energy may be planning to terminate roughly 600 grants nationwide. As of now, the list currently includes two DOE contracts awarded to the Solar and Storage Industries Institute.
These projects aim to solve two of the toughest challenges in clean energy: how to build faster and strengthen community support for large-scale projects.
“While it is unclear if these proposed cancellations are final, there is no doubt that in cancelling grants like these, the administration would make it harder to build the energy infrastructure Americans rely on. We will use every tool in our toolbox to defend them," said, David Gahl.
