It was the middle of the night, at about 1.30am, when Norway lost to England.

Yet thousands of Norwegians went to the Palace in Oslo and celebrated with one final Viking row.

They did not riot. They did not burn cars. They did not smash bus stops or glass windows of shops.

They smiled. The laughed. They saw the positive in their performance. They celebrated their heritage. They were proud of who they have been in the past and who they are today.

Norway might be out of the World Cup 2026 but they are in our hearts.

In the last three weeks, I think we have all fallen a little bit in love with Norwegians.

When I look back on my career, from Harold & Kumar to American Reunion to Cobra Kai to Obliterated, there’s always been an undercurrent of patriotism in my work.

That doesn’t mean I’m always comfortable with everything going on in this country. Like every other nation across the globe, we have our problems. But to quote fake George W. Bush in Harold & Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay, “You don’t have to believe in your government to be a good American. You just have to believe in your country.”

And I still believe in this country. Because I believe in the people of this country. Through making TV and movies for over 25 years, I’ve been lucky enough to work in California, Georgia, Louisiana, New Jersey, New York, Michigan, Florida, Texas, Nevada, New Mexico, and the state of Washington.

I’ve collaborated with thousands of people from all walks of life, each with their own worldview and political beliefs. And not once has that stopped us from coming together, busting our asses, and working together in the hopes of making something special.

There are loud voices that want to make us feel like our country is doomed. That our neighbors are monsters or that people who don’t share our exact same beliefs are the enemy. As someone who has seen much of this country, I can tell you that’s bullshit.

People are people. 99.9% of us wake up every day thinking about our own shit. We go to work or school or wherever. We hope to have some laughs with our loved ones. Or to eat something delicious. Or that our favorite sports team wins. We’re focused on making our own days as enjoyable as possible. Not on how we can screw each other over.

This 4th, I’d suggest trying to celebrate all the things you love about America, instead of obsessing over all the ways we need to improve. Think about what unites us, not what divides us. And tomorrow, if you choose to spend your time pursuing change, remember that your fellow citizens are your partners to collaborate with, not your enemies.

Eat a burger. Drink a beer. Enjoy your 4th of July!
