I’ll sometimes pull instruments out on
the second snare hit, usually the fourth beat of the bar.

I’ll mute the kick and the bass so that snare really
stands out. I do that because the second snare is the
one that hits hardest.

I keep the first snare lighter with
velocity, then let the second one smack. That’s how
you add impact and make your drums hit harder without adding more sounds.
