Minneapolis Police Officer Jamal Mitchell is a hero.
Yesterday, the MPD lost Jamal, one of its finest, in the line of duty. Jamal was born 2/12/88. He was a fiancé, a father, and a son. He made the ultimate sacrifice protecting his city and community.

Congrats to @MinneapolisPD Cmdr Abdirahman Ali, and to all recent promotees! With 18 new command staff, and 90 subsequent transfers, this is the biggest shakeup in MPD history. It is significant for the MPD and for all who were promoted. We are decisively moving forward together!

Promotions included the first Somali-American to earn the rank of Commander, likely making him the highest ranking Somali in policing in the US. Also, the first African-American woman to earn the rank of Commander, and the first Asian-American woman to serve as an Inspector.

Tonight a 7-year veteran of the MPD assigned to 4th Precinct CRT was shot in the line of duty. Personnel from MPD, our local LE partners, and many from nearby agencies gathered at NMMC in solidarity to show support and honor our officer once he was discharged from the hospital.

Following the incident, we reached out to the head of the organization that funded the event and received an apology. Many of the attendees, including children, were glad to see the officers in uniform. It is wonderful to hear that the event was a success, and that the community

SAPA reached out to an organizer of this event who approved the presence of officers to attend in their full police uniform and marked police squads. Somali officers attended the event to celebrate and enjoy the Somali Independence Day with the community.

This evening, the SAPA hosted a Crime Awareness listening session to address the surge of crime related activities in the Somali community. Our mission is hear the voices and concerns of our community members, build rapport, and safeguard our communities.
