Hargeisa and Somaliland are experiencing rapid population growth, and with it, an increasing demand for modern infrastructure. As the capital grows, Hargeisa's airport must expand to accommodate future needs. Which one of these designs do you think would best serve the city.
Should Ireland recognise Somaliland? While on the Christmas break I wanted to raise this question which I first asked in 2009.
Since Somaliland declared its independence in 1991 it has arguably been one of the most democratic countries in Africa with six Presidents, multiple peaceful transfers of power and possesses its own government, currency, police force and passports.
Given the reports that the incoming US Trump administration are considering recognising Somaliland’s independence, I believe it’s time for the new incoming Irish government to form a position on this question. I believe given Somaliland’s impressive democratic record that it is time for Ireland to recognise their independence or at the very least address the question.

Trump has promised to acknowledge Somaliland as an independent nation and the world's newest country.
Why? Look where it is located and we need an ally there.
Quick Facts About Somaliland
For those who may not know, Somaliland is not a new country. In fact, it predates Somalia, which illegally claims it.
1: Gained Independence: Somaliland became independent on June 26, 1960, following its separation from British rule.
2: Former Commonwealth Member: It was a member of the British Commonwealth before Somalia occupied it illegally.
3: Early Democracy: Somaliland is one of Africa's oldest democracies, holding free and fair elections since 1960.
4: Genocide under Somalia: The people of Somaliland suffered a brutal genocide under the regime of Siad Barre from 1969 to 1991. During this period, an estimated half a million Somalilanders lost their lives in a campaign of violence and repression.
4: Reclaimed Independence: Although it was occupied by Somalia for a period, Somaliland regained its independence in 1991 after a long and hard-fought struggle.
5: Democratic Stability: Since 1991, Somaliland has held 9 consecutive democratic elections, making it a leader in political stability in the Horn of Africa.
6: Strategic Port: The country boasts the largest port in Sub-Saharan Africa, Berbera, a vital trade hub.
7: Population: Somaliland has a population of approximately 6.5 million people.
8: Capital City: Hargeisa is the capital and largest city of Somaliland.
9: Longest Coastline: Somaliland features the longest coastline in East Africa, offering significant strategic and economic potential.
10: Rich Cultural Heritage: Somaliland is home to ancient rock art, such as the famous Laas Geel paintings, which are over 5,000 years old and provide a glimpse into the region's early human history.
@BRICSinfo Somaliland absolutely deserves to be recognized as an independent nation! It's high time the world acknowledged its rightful status and the dreams of its resilient people!
Donald Trump will make Somaliland great again! Recognizing Somaliland as an independent nation would be a historic move, ending the outdated 'One Somalia' policy. It's time for the U.S. to stand with Somaliland's democratic values and stability in the region.#Congress#senate
