The councillors don’t seem at fault on this. One of them at least has helped highlight this. The problem seems to be Alison Sherwin & her team.
Let’s hope no one is hurt.

@landatthebottom @reformaggedon I’ve pointed out to the engineers who made this decision ( it’s not councillors), that it’s a negligent disregard for pedestrian safety & they will be reported to the police in this respect if there are any injuries following completion of this project.

@landatthebottom Where batteries do have an advantage is that they use the energy they have more efficiently than diesel to create propulsion ( >80% vs. ~40%). Just they hold a lot less energy, especially if the battery is small

@landatthebottom There’s no one answer, because you can vary so many parameters. For the new buses, best to ask the bus manufacturer. For the retrofits, best ask FirstBus. What is clear is that all EVs are heavier than their diesel equivalent. If they’re not, they’ve compromised on something

@landatthebottom You can cut the weight of the battery by making it smaller. Then it’ll have less weight, but also less range, but it may be quicker to charge. That’s the case with the diesels they retrofitted with batteries in Bath, but the new buses have bigger batteries & fewer passengers

@landatthebottom @Angiemut Interesting. I have asked whether these new electric buses will impact passenger carrying capacity… batteries are a lot larger than diesel fuel (x25) for the same energy, & time in useful service, charging is slow ( hours versus minutes) compared to filling a tank.
