Not to mention that a lot of games just fed lives out like candy and didn't really give a punishment for losing all of them which made them feel completely pointless

If done right, lives can serve as a good way to increase tension in a level and make players think about what they're doing instead of brute-forcing everything and 1ups can serve as a reward for playing well. Otherwise you have SM64 where it just takes slightly longer to get back

i get what people say about galaxy 2 but I never understood the complaint that there's no atmosphere. Sure it might be more bright and colorful but there's still a lot of stand out moments.
