Born #OTD in 1933, Sal Castro was a Lincoln High School teacher who inspired students to stage the 1968 East L.A. walkouts. The students demanded bilingual education and increased support for Mexican American students seeking a college education.
Happy birthday to Nina Otero-Warren! Born #OTD in 1882, Otero-Warren was a leader in New Mexico’s suffrage movement and the first female superintendent of Santa Fe public schools. She emphasized using the Spanish language in the suffrage fight to reach Hispanic women.
Born #OTD in 1900, Manuel C. "M.C." Gonzales was a civil rights trailblazer & lawyer who helped found La Liga Protectora Mexicana in 1917, Asociación Jurídica Mexicana in 1921, & the Sons of Texas in 1922. He served as the third president of the LULAC in 1931.

Born #OTD in 1905, Raoul Cortez was a pioneer of Spanish language media, founding the first full-time Spanish language radio and TV stations in the US. A consummate advocate for Mexican Americans, he was active in LULAC, serving as national president in 1948-1949.
Born #OTD in 1899, Alonso S. Perales was one of the most prominent US civil rights leaders of the twentieth century. He was a civil rights lawyer, diplomat, and public intellectual who was a principal founder of the League of United Latin American Citizens.
Born #OTD in 1930, Dr. José Angel Cárdenas was an education reformer who was the first Mexican American superintendent in Bexar County and, in 1973, founded the Intercultural Development Research Association to increase educational opportunities for all students.

Born #OTD in 1920, Felix Benjamin Treviño was a San Antonio civic leader, business owner, & City Council member. He taught citizenship and English classes to Mexican immigrants and was known for improving the West Side while serving on the council.
#OTD in 1921, Orden Hijos de America, the first statewide Mexican American civil rights organization in Texas, was founded in San Antonio. In 1929, they merged with others to form LULAC, the oldest continuously operating Mexican American civil rights organization in the U.S.
Born #OTD in 1917, Carlos Cadena was a civil rights advocate, lawyer, scholar, & judge who argued the landmark case Hernandez v. Texas before the Supreme Court in 1954. The Court voted unanimously to end the exclusion of people from jury duty based on their national origin.
