The Israeli army is withdrawing from the perimeter of the Ali al-Taher hills and shelling its own stranded vehicles that it failed to retrieve.
But why?
Since 2024, U.S. diplomatic efforts have provided Israel with political cover while effectively constraining the Resistance in Lebanon and allowing Israel to strike with relative freedom.
Over the following 15 months, Israel succeeded in dismantling much of the Resistanceโs infrastructure south of the Litani River.
The Lebanese state evacuated civilians from more than 17 border villages, leaving Israeli forces able to occupy and systematically destroy them while searching for and seizing Resistance weapons and facilities as far as the Litani.
This created the impression that any further Israeli advance toward the river would be an easy walkover, similar to what happened in southern Syria following the collapse of the Assad government.
But the 2026 round of fighting has exposed a very different reality.
Israel was caught off guard when the Resistance seized the initiative almost immediately after Israeli forces crossed the border.
Using specialized drones and long-range anti-tank weapons, fighters advanced above ground and re-entered areas south of the Litani.
Rather than attempting to hold every position against a larger invading force, they shifted toward a strategy of attrition and exhaustion, accepting that they would not hold every line while focusing on inflicting sustained costs on the advancing force.
Israel knows what awaits it north of the Litani.
The Resistance retains fortifications, tunnels, and deeper installations.
The difficulty of capturing even two tunnels on the Ali al-Taher hill after months of heavy operations illustrates the scale of the challenge that lies ahead.
Despite the unprecedented concessions made by the Lebanese authorities, which have placed them in an extremely vulnerable position before the Lebanese public, Israel chose to continue trying to dismantle the tunnel network in the Ali al-Taher hills.
Yet even after all of this, Israel failed to break the will to fight of the resistance fighters entrenched in those tunnels. Nor was it able to achieve any meaningful advance beyond the Litani that could be translated into a political gain.
Several days ago, the resistance fighters who had been entrenched in the tunnels withdrew. Israel then carried out a highly publicized demolition operation over the hills, despite having no tactical presence there and establishing no meaningful geographic control over the area.
And with elections looming in both Israel and the United States, the political costs of a deeper advance could be enormous.
Neither Netanyahu nor Trump can afford a war defined by mounting losses in personnel and armor.
The Resistance has succeeded in dragging Israel into a war of attrition, one that is steadily increasing the military and political costs of every Israeli advance.

This is South Lebanon right now.
Israel is massively bombing our villages in the middle of the night.
This is what they call a โceasefire.โ
