My neighbor paid off his house in 2021.
He was 64, completely debt-free, and so happy about it that he threw a little party in the driveway. I brought the beer.
Five years later, he doesn’t have a mortgage. No lender. No monthly house payment.
But the house still costs him about $1,340 every month.
His property taxes were $6,800 last year after the county reassessed the property. His insurance jumped to $7,200 after two rough storm seasons, even though he’s never filed a claim. Then there’s another $220 a month for the HOA.
And none of that covers repairs or maintenance.
He’s living on Social Security and a small pension. About $3,100 a month.
So roughly 43% of his monthly income is going toward a house that’s completely paid off.
He thought about selling and downsizing, but the smaller places around here aren’t much cheaper once you factor in closing costs and the higher taxes that can come with buying another property.
So he’s stuck.
He can’t comfortably afford to stay, but moving doesn’t really solve the problem either.
That’s the part nobody tells you about paying off a mortgage.
You make the final payment and think you’re finally done.
You’re not.
The mortgage disappears. The taxes, insurance, HOA fees, repairs and maintenance don’t.
You can spend 30 years paying for the house, only to spend the next 30 paying everyone else to let you keep it.
I work the front desk at a small doctor’s office, and I wish people could see what happens on the other side of the phone. Every day, older patients call us confused.
They are told to use the patient portal, upload documents, check lab results online, fill out forms before the visit, and confirm everything through a link. Some of them do not know what a portal is.
Some do not have a smartphone.
Some have one, but they are afraid to click the wrong thing.
Last week, a man in his late 80s called about his test results.
He said, “Ma’am, I don’t mean to bother you, but the computer says I have a message and I don’t know how to open it.”
He sounded ashamed.
That broke my heart.
He should not have to feel ashamed for needing a human being.
Technology can be helpful. I understand that.
But when people who built this country are made to feel helpless because everything became a login and a password, we have gone too far.
Not everything needs to be an app.
Not every answer should be hidden behind a screen.
Sometimes people need a voice.
A patient person.
A real human who says, “Don’t worry, I can help you.”
Progress should not leave seniors behind.
Because one day, the world will move faster than us too.
And I hope someone is kind enough to slow down.

April 15. Whether you know it or not, you are the victim of an armed robbery today.
The federal government will seize your home, your bank account, and even you, if you do not forfeit a percentage of your hard-earned income.
Income tax is one of the greatest atrocities our government commits upon us.
Effectively, the government is demanding a stake in your life.
The harder you work, the more you strive, the more they take.
Your success is penalized.

King George says it took him just FIVE MINUTES to realize he was standing in a room full of pure evil and degeneracy.
“I swore I’d never step foot back in that sick place again – and it took me the next twenty years trying to shower off that nasty filth!”
While other stars were on their knees begging to join the degenerate predator club, this country legend saw straight through the twisted Hollywood swamp and ran the hell away like a real man should!
King George is a damn wise legend for dodging that pedo-infested cesspool from day one!
