OBERTO regulars will, we're sure, be appalled to read this. Opera has always been a strength at Brookes, in terms of publications, awards, research income, and our OBERTO events have created vital connections between academia and the opera industry. They are completely unique.
Huge thanks to @GillianMacMSP for hosting @CHSScotland event @ScotParl & @jenni_minto & John Todd for speaking & the @ScottishOpera trio @SopranoJLeary @Gareth_Composer #karenmciver for bringing such beautiful voice to our evening. Our No Life Half Lived #2 strategy is now live!
Read this thread. Most superficial measures supposed to be about ‘diversity’ in opera are meaningless without addressing the economic conditions which make working in this field often inaccessible to those without independent means or a high-earning partner.
I had a great time presenting at #Oberto2023 conference alongside listening to many more fascinating and pertinent discussions around opera and money. Lots to digest. Thank you for organising @amwilson_opera et al.
@NoisyMV@amwilson_opera You too, and great to hear about your work with @if_opera and thoughts for future next steps - a potentially really positive new direction for opera and singers in the Uk!
A compelling pitch from @MimiDoulton, full of devastating stats, on the truly raw deal freelancer singers get. So many below the minimum wage, no security, massive gender pay gap, and pay prospects often get *worse* as a career goes on. #Oberto2023
So looking forward to this. I’ll be presenting a paper which examines ‘access’, ‘inclusivity’, and ‘elitism’ in relation to opera and money. Looking forward to hearing the many other speakers that day too. 👇🏻@RCS_TheExchange

Sir Elton John: “I played Chopin and Mozart, Bach and Debussy… I am so grateful for my classical training.” 🎶❤️
The legendary pianist spoke to Classic FM’s @TimLihoreau in 2019 at the @RoyalAcadMusic, about his time there as a student.
