When people talk about the “heroes of the #UPA”, I always ask: which UPA?

The First Ukrainian Insurgent Army was established at the end of 1941 in Polesia and northern #Volhynia, and its founder was Taras Bulba-Borovets.
It was only in April 1943 that the #Banderites stole the name “UPA”, seeking to subordinate all factions of the Ukrainian underground to themselves.

Ataman Bulba-Borovets did not feel any sympathy for the Poles, but he intended to fight them using different methods.

During negotiations on April 9, 1943, the Banderites demanded that Bulba-Borovets “cleanse the entire insurgent territory of the Polish population.” He rejected this proposal, stating:

“Only a sovereign state can free a given territory from national minorities through population exchange, not a regular army through repression. In response to hostile Polish acts, only the actual perpetrators should be punished, not the entire population. The principle of collective and family responsibility can only be applied by barbarians, not by a civilized army.”

In a later open letter to the leadership of the OUN-B (Bandera faction) dated August 4, 1943, Taras Bulba-Borovets clearly presented his position on the Polish question:

“Can a true revolutionary and statesman subordinate himself to the leadership of a party that begins the construction of a state with the slaughter of national minorities and the insane burning of their homes? Ukraine has far more dangerous enemies than the Poles. Every child knows that the extermination of Poles in some districts will not eliminate the Polish threat to Ukraine. The Polish nation exists regardless, and as long as it remains in the same bondage as we do, it will - due to the circumstances - be not our enemy, but our ally. What intentions the Poles may have toward us in the future and how our relations will develop is another matter. Today, instead of slaughter, we must build a single revolutionary front of all oppressed nations against the occupiers, and not create unnecessary additional fronts for ourselves.”

The goal of AK was to liberate 🇵🇱, fight collaborators and 🇩🇪 army, there was not any goal to eradicate regular people. 2 diff org
