In the metabolic view, GABA can be seen as the calming neurotransmitter.
Glutamate can be seen as the excitatory neurotransmitter.
Essentially, with high energy, the ratio of GABA to glutamate is properly balanced, favoring GABA.
When energy is low, the body loses its ability to inhibit excitation (low GABA), leading to “excitotoxcity” and eventual cell death.
When cells are stimulated, they must receive inhibition to return to the resting state.
Excitotoxicity can create an illusion of energy where a person might feel directionless and jittery.
This state of excitotoxcity (high glutamate and low GABA) is likely involved in ADHD, autism, anxiety, depression, digestive issues, OCD, etc.
Part of the therapeutic benefit of GABA is that it increases alpha brain waves, promoting a state of unconscious flow where action becomes effortless.
Glutamate is actually the precursor to GABA and this conversion is dependent on vitamin B6.
Vitamin B6 can also lower prolactin and increase dopamine, thus supporting GABA further.
Vitamin B6 in the form of P5P is best and 5-10mg can be a good place to start.
When vitamin B6 and magnesium are low, this can activate the NMDA receptor which increases glutamate.
Some NDMA receptors antagonists include magnesium, taurine, zinc, agmatine, adamantane and minocycline.
Ammonia (produced from excessive protein breakdown) is an activator of NDMA.
Keeping protein consumption no more than 1g per lb of body weight can help keep ammonia low. On top of that, Ceylon cinnamon as well as lithium can lower ammonia.
Hopefully someone can find this helpful.
