The death of Marcel Niat Njifenji has brought the number of senators who have died since 2023 to 17.
Niat was the pioneering President of the Cameroon Senate since its inception in 2013. He was appointed three times as a senator by Paul Biya and also served as his one-time constitutional successor.
His death has left the Upper House of parliament with just 83 senators out of 100.
Meanwhile, in the lower house, 21 parliamentarians have since died after being elected in 2020.
Altogether, 38 Members of Parliament have died in Cameroon.

Former Biggy237 housemate Zidel Abla, known by her stage name as Cameroon Pepper, on December 25 spent Christmas in a special way by reaching out to widows and other people in Njikwa, Momo Division, in the Northwest region.
Through her foundation, Zidel Abla Initiatives, she distributed bags of rice, Maggi, cooking oil and onions, among others.
“I didn't do Oblee this Christmas. “I sacrificed my bone-straight money to put smiles on my people’s faces, a few widows of Soh Ngwo njikwa,” she said after the event.
