“I wish I had learned his name in another way.”
@NoorPahlavi asks the world to look beyond the Islamic Republic’s manufactured label and see the life it tried to erase: Ali-Sina Mostafavi, a 38-year-old mountaineer who had summited Mount Everest, a musician, an animal lover, and a man with a deep appreciation for life and nature.
The regime called him a terrorist. His life tells another story.
Today, I learned the name Ali-Sina Mostafavi. I wish I had learned his name in another way.
The regime called him a terrorist. This video shows the person behind that label: a 38-year-old mountaineer who had summited Mount Everest, a musician, an animal lover, and someone with a deep appreciation for life and nature. Watch it and judge for yourself.
Navi Pillay's sins of omission were accompanied by sins of commission.
In 2013, Emma Reilly, a human rights lawyer who worked under Ms. Pillay, reported that staff were instructed to give Chinese officials information on individuals planning to speak out about Beijing’s human rights abuses. She says the list grew to more than 50 Uyghur, Tibetan, Hong Kong, and Chinese dissidents.
Some, she said, later “testified under oath to their family members being intimidated, arbitrarily detained, tortured, disappeared, and even killed in concentration camps.”
The rial’s continued loss of value has affected household savings, everyday transactions and rental agreements. Uncertainty about inflation makes it difficult to plan ahead and anticipate the real value of future payments.
In this video, Borghan Nezami, economist and contributing author at the Iran Prosperity Project, discusses why households have turned to dollars to preserve the value of their assets and explains how high, unpredictable inflation makes planning future payments difficult.
Iran executed mountaineer and musician Ali Sina Mostafavi, 38, on Wednesday, according to state sources, continuing the Islamic Republic’s use of executions as punishment against protesters.

Yesterday, we were trying to save Ali-Sina Mostafavi’s life. Today, I am writing about him in the past tense.
The Islamic Republic called him a “terrorist.” But his life reveals what that label was intended to erase: a 38-year-old mountaineer who had summited Mount Everest, a musician, and a man drawn to nature and full of appreciation for life.
They tortured him, forced him to confess, condemned him in a sham trial, and executed him today.
This was state terror intended to frighten an entire nation. Everyone who ordered, enabled, and carried out his execution must be identified and held accountable.

Ali-Sina Mostafavi was a mountaineer and athlete. He had climbed in the Himalayas and was a man full of life, with achievements, ambitions, and a future.
Ali-Sina was sentenced to death following torture, a forced confession, and a sham trial. His state killing is part of the regime’s campaign to terrorize Iranians and silence dissent.
As the Committee for Drafting Iran’s Transitional Justice Regulations has warned:
“Every execution adds to your criminal liability. Do not count on these crimes being forgotten, immunity from punishment, or forgiveness.”
Remember Ali-Sina not only for how the regime killed him, but for how he lived. Those responsible for his execution will face justice.
