Sea Of Thieves will be testing the complete removal of PVE diving to address the problem of players not staying on the same server for very long. This however does not address an even bigger problem with adventure that causes it to feel so empty at times: There is TOO MUCH SAILING. I know some people actually enjoy the sailing and find it relaxing, but for most players that novelty wore off long ago. The player interaction is what keeps people around.
Here's something I typed up before Season 18 that still remains true today:
"In my opinion, the worst part of this game is when you spend 15-20 minutes sailing across the map to fight somebody, you sink them in 2 minutes, and then it’s over. When players spend most of their session just travelling to their destination, they’re going to get bored fast. In S18 it’s going to be even worse, because now you will be able to spawn at Morrow’s Peak, with a new event at Molten Sands.
Imagine you spawn at Port Merrick and you see 4 ships on the map at Molten Sands. If you don’t have wind, it will take damn near 30 minutes to get there. By that time, all of the ships are sunk and the winning ship is headed to sell. Even if you get there in time, the fight is gonna be much shorter than the amount of time you spent getting to it. Or even worse, they just run from you so even more of your time is wasted.
The amount of sailing isn’t just a problem with PVP either. Nobody wants to sail for several minutes just to spend 30 seconds digging something up before it's right back to sailing simulator.
Recently some big streamers (Jynxzi, Caseoh, Sketch) tried to play SOT with tens of thousands of people watching, and it was just a complete embarrassment for the game. Even with stream snipers looking for them, they sailed around for 45 minutes in the center of the map and did not see a single human. The server they were in likely wasn’t empty or they would’ve merged. Every ship was probably just doing their own thing on random islands, but new players don’t know what to look for. So they just sail around, find nobody, and never play the game again.
Now 1 idea that would help this problem is cutting some of the dead space out of the map. Just make the entire thing smaller, and the game will feel more alive. For example, there’s a 2-3 square wide column that’s almost entirely empty between the Devil’s Roar and the rest of the map. I know it's easier said than done, but cut that out entirely. Clearly they are unable to bring the player cap back to where it was at launch, so making the map smaller accomplishes the same thing. Rust server owners learned this long ago.
Another idea is to make use of the Tall Tale portals. What if you could sail into one and use it to fast travel to any of the other portals on the map on the same server. Then if you spawn at Port Merrick you only have to sail a couple squares and then you’re in the Devil’s Roar."
With the removal of diving, that last idea makes more sense now than ever. You stay on the same server but still skip a lot of the sailing.
Also, removing PVE diving still doesn't solve the issue of hourglass battles taking up 2-4 slots on every server. Almost every reaper 5 you see will dive before you get to them. Just make hourglass instanced like LSS already.
A few things that would instantly make custom seas so much more fun:
- Instant respawns
- Ability to make kills full heal you
- Ability to make kills instantly reload both of your guns
Imagine entering flow state and wiping the fort
Hell while we’re at it they should add a deathmatch queue with these settings enabled
