On the question of how African #legal, #youth, communities and civil society actors can harness the legal and political momentum towards #ClimateReparation, Ms. Mary Morrison (@BiophilicKE) recalled protesting the felling of a fig tree in Nairobi 🇰🇪 during expressway construction.
“As a lawyer I filed court papers, but as an activist I translated legal processes for communities. People don’t always know the term ‘#reparations’, but they know what it means when floods destroy homes, crops, or #health. Civil society’s role is to bridge that gap.”

On this #AfricaDay, we commemorate the 62nd anniversary of the founding of the Organization of African Unity (OAU), now the African Union (AU), established on May 25, 1963.
The 2025 AU Theme of the Year, “Justice for Africans and People of African Descent Through Reparations,” underscores our collective pursuit of justice, dignity, and healing.
This theme aims to develop a Common African Position on Reparations, establish an African Reparatory Programme of Action, and strengthen collaboration with the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and the global African diaspora through a Joint Mechanism on Reparations .
These efforts are crucial in ensuring that Africans and people of African descent receive justice in tangible and transformative ways . #YearofReparations

🌍 Africa is the innovator.
Last year, leaders, educators, civil society, youth, and partners gathered in Addis Ababa to reimagine #STEM#education in Africa. They concluded that STEM isn't just a subject. It's a solution to poverty, inequality, food insecurity, #climate, #health and more.

African Womn Human Rights Defenders (AWHRDs) are not just fighting for justice. They are resisting relentless violence in the face of crisis and conflict. As our feminist work acknowledges the deep trauma AWHRDs endure and the unprocessed pain that affects both their well-being and the movements, we stand in solidarity with feminist movements and AWHRDs on the frontlines in the DRC and Sudan.
We have not forgotten you. We stand with you in solidarity.
You can read more about our recent report, ‘Healing is for the Brave, ’ which highlights a story of a Sudanese AWHRD’s healing journey, through this link: https://t.co/MME3xnxZ4F

📌 The Democratic Republic of Congo has the largest number of displaced people in #Africa—over 6.9 million people forced from their homes due to conflict.
📌 Despite being one of the world’s richest countries in natural resources, millions of Congolese people live in poverty, fear, and instability caused by violence and exploitation.
📌 Thousands of lives are at risk right now, but change is possible when we pay attention!
