⚖️What is the difference between DISPOSITION and DEPOSITION? 🤔

These common legal terms sound similar but are nothing alike. However, they can be easy to confusion unless you hear them and use them on a regular basis.

Disposition is a legal term we use in the district attorney’s office multiple times a day. That’s because it refers to the outcome of a criminal case - guilty, not guilty, dismissed, or diversion.

Deposition is a word common in civil cases but not as common in criminal cases. It is sworn testimony taken outside of a courtroom and used to gather information.

So, if you are involved in a lawsuit, there is a decent chance that you or others who know about the case will be deposed. However if you or a loved one are charged criminally, your case continues until there is a disposition.

Monday, June 23rd, the Shelby County Commission will vote on funding for a focused crime lab in Shelby County. Shelby County Mayor Lee Harris and I have worked to educate commissioners and the community about the importance of this lab.

Now we need your help.

Please email your county commissioner and respectfully ask them to fund the lab so we can increase the solve rate of crimes and hold offenders accountable.

The present system with a lab in Jackson, TN serving all of West Tennessee lacks the capacity to meet all of our needs timely. This is not a criticism of the hard-working people in that lab. It is simply a reality of the volume of evidence that needs to be tested to bring violent criminals to justice and drive crime rates downward.
