The lower dungeon of Warwick Castle features an ancient chamber known as an "oubliette," where prisoners were abandoned and left to be forgotten. An oubliette is characterized by its concealed location, accessible solely through a trapdoor in the ceiling. These hidden dungeons were prevalent in medieval castles and served as confinement for various types of captives, ranging from political detainees to common thieves. Oubliettes were cramped, dimly lit, and narrow cavities within the larger dungeon, allowing for no means of escape due to the single entrance and exit. The term "oubliette" finds its origin in the French word "oublie," which translates to "forget." Consequently, prisoners thrown into these dreadful chambers were simply left to be disregarded and abandoned.
